Analysis of a music video - Miss Georgiou

Drake- Over

Artists appeal to audiences through there use of micro elements. The use of mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing help exaggerate the artists thoughts and feelings and how they come across to audiences. This in turn then builds a relationship with the audience as they are more aware of what the artist is going through and the audience is able to relate to this.

Drake is shown to be angry. This is shown on the bellow image where a red filter has been edited in. The use of this emphasises his feeling emotions of hate, love and the danger associated with these feelings. This is relatable to the rap genre as danger and hate are common themes explored within rap music videos.

Drake's lifestyle is shown to be hectic this is shown at 0:40-0:44 on music video. The use of cinematography being the flashing lights convoy his lifestyle in that he is always busy and goes out allot as flashing lights are frequently associated with nightlife. This then leads to audiences envying his fun lifestyle and therefore idolising him, This leads to a stronger artist/audience relationship, strenghthning his already popular fan base. It is a common convention seen within many music videos in rap genre as rap usually targets a more youthful audience, one that would be going out and being part of this night life and so in aligning themselves with nightlife artists are able to appear more relatable to their audience.

Drake is represented to be struggling with how fast everything is going. At one point in the music video at 1:44-2:00 Drake is in a time lapse where everyone is moving at a speeded up pace behind him. This shows how he is struggling to keep up with the pace that his life is going at at the moment.
This is unconevtional as it is representing him as weak and vulnerable a representation that is rarely seen in the rap genre. I would argue that this has been done in an attempt to appeal to a more female audience through appearing more sensitive in order to strenghten his female fan base.

Women are represented as sexual objects throughout Drakes music video. The women character (mise-en-scene) seen in the bellow snapshot is a perfect example of this. The audience is unable to see her face which suggests she has no identity but her sexual identity as the focus is on her bum. Her provocative body language is also making her appear as an object which furthers my initial point. This is conventional in the rap genre as rap artists sexualise the female body in order to promote a particular lifestyle that their target audience of male teen- young adults find attractive.

The focus is constantly on drake through the clever use of cimematography the frequent use of close ups (an example of which is shown bellow) helps to promote Drake as an artist and be easily recognised by audiences. This is done in many music videos not just in the rap genre as close ups help to promote the artist and allow audiences to be aware of who they are making them more popular to audiences.

Flo Rida - Club Can't Handle Me ft. David Guetta

Throughout the music video Flo Rida's lifestyle is being represented as fun, lively and expensive. This is shown through the use of iconography (mise-en-scene), which in the bellow image is the luxurious sport cars.By him arriving to the club in this car audiences imminently envy his lifestyle and wealth and therefore idolise him as an artist, creating relationship with the viewers as they want his lifestyle. This is common practise in many music videos as glamorising there lifestyle makes them appear more attractive to audiences. However its unconventional to be seen in the dance genre as the focus tend to be on flashing lights and everyone having fun and dancing.

Drake is shown to be experience a vary fast paced lifestyle this is shown through the speed of editing within the music video. The speed at which the video cuts to the next shot throughout the music video helps to add excitment and builds an illiousion for the veiwers that the artist is having such a excting, fast paced night. This conventional to the genre and is done in many dance music videos as it emphasises the fast paced music and makes it appear that the artists and characters involved are having a more fun time.

Drake contrasts both the lound and qwiet throught his video. The clever use of editing, shown in the screenshot bellow, helps further my point. The two contrasting images show both inside of the club and the outside allowing audiences to see how much fun they are having (left side of picture) compared to everyone ealse outide of the club seen on the right side of the picture. This again helps audiences build a relationship with the artist as they want this life style and belive that in listening to this type of music they are buying into and beeing part of this life. This is conventional to the dance genre as if people are shown to be having a good time on the music video the people listening to it will think thats its more fun.

The use of cinematography within the music video is used to show everyone in the club, allowing the camera to capture as many people in the shot as possible through the use of high angled shot, shown bellow. The shot emphasis the fun and the club atmosphere. Its allows more people to get into the shot making the music video look more realistic as audiences would expect a club to be full of people. Making music videos as realistic as possible is conventional to nearly all genres in music as it allows audiences to relate and build a relationship with audiences as they feel as though the artist is more 'real'.

Flo Rida as an artist is promoted throughout the music video. This is done through the use of close ups (one of which is seen bellow). The use of close ups within the music video allows the artist to be seen and veiwed by audiences. This then allows audiences to identify the artist, in this case Flo Rida, in other media, promoting and advertising the artist in doing so. This is done in nearly all music videos as it is important for audiences to be aware of what the artist looks like to help advertise their music.

Katie Perry- Firework

The pop genre that Katie Perry belongs to is that of a vary conventional one. The first use of cinematography within the music video is an establishing shot (seen bellow). This sets the scene for the music video, showing the audience where the music video will take place. The upscale setting is . This is conventional to the pop genre as glamorous locations are attractive to audiences as it convoys the artist, Katie perry, in a light that is more desirable, audiences build a relationship with the artist as they want to be her.

The characters as well as the artist are made to appear more powerful within the music video. This is done through the use of cinematography, particularly the use of the low angled shot shown bellow. The shot makes the character look bigger as it is taken from bellow. This therefore makes the character appear more powerful and as they are a cancer patient it is empowering to the viewer as they are usually represented as weak through all sources of media. This is an unconventional effect to be shown in the pop genre as it makes the artist and female characters appear more masculine as opposed to feminine and attractive to appeal to the young target audience they market this genre of music at.

The Katie Perry is also represented to appear relatable to her audiences. This is done through the use of mise-en-scene. The setting of a 'house party' shown in the picture bellow, is attractive to the young 12-24 year old target audience of the pop genre, as they find parties appealing. This then helps the artist (Katie Perry) to build a relationship with the audience as they both have found 'common ground', where Katie Perry is shown to like parties as there is one shown within her music video. This is relatable to the pop genre as artists in this genre need to appear relatable to there audience in order to help build this relationship and to gain fans through relatability towards the audiences who are exposed to this music.

Bright colours are used throughout the music video, the most abundent use of this would be the fireworks that are edited into the music video (shown bellow). The use of the bright colours, particularly the use of the fireworks are used in order to keep the audiences attention throughout the video. The young audience that this song would be targeted at find the bright colours attractive and it keeps their attention, ensuring that they are aware of the music and the artist, increasing the songs publicity. This method of manipulating editing to help keep the audiences attention is used allot within the pop genre. The young audience finds the fireworks attractive and so they keep watching the music video.

The narrative within the music video helps to maintain the viewers attention. The use of editing such as the shot reverse shot (shown bellow) helps to build a larger sense of narrative helping the audience connect and feel more involved with the music video. This is done in many music genres as building a narrative helps audience build a relationship with the artist and their music as the narrative may relate to their lives in some way. Especially within this particular music video, where there are several different scenarios going on such as the over weight girl being self conscious about her body.

To conclude i would argue that from what i have seen technical elements used within music videos to make them specific and conventional to a specific genre vary. Music videos appeal to their audience through the use of manipulating the 4 micro elements (Mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography and sound) in a way that the target audience of the genre and music video would find attractive. In order for a music director to create a music video, generic and conventional to its genre they must use the micro elements in an appropriate way in order to convey the artist in a way that is generic to the genre they belong to. For example when creating a music video for Katie Perry you must use the micro elements in accordance to the pop genre that it belongs to, so bright colours, skimpy outfits and glamorous locations would be appropriate.

The music video is able to build a relationship with the artist as it is representing him in a certain light and so audiences will associate the style of his music video with the artist themselves. For example if the music video is of the rap genre audiences would expect to see lots of money, anti- social behaviour and attractive women, they would then associate the artist to be like this and have the lifestyle being represented in the music video.
From the research that i have conducted today i will be able to better my music video as i have furthered my knowladge of the music industry and music videos on the whole.  I have been inspired by Flo Rida's song 'Club can't handle me' to create a music video conventional to the dance genre. I hope to replicate the bright and flashing lights seen in his music video into my work in order to create a generic and conventional music video for myself.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of how music videos appeal to an audience. You have made a start in identifying three different music genres, by focusing on some of the micro elements. However, further analysis of the mise-en-scene is needed, as you have failed to include all the five areas.

Also some of your paragraphs have moved due to the images, so ensure that these move back to the correct place.
