Objective: to be able to identify the purpose of copyright in the music industry

Outcomes:
All: will be able to research into the copyright law and describe how it is used within the music industry  (Grade E)
Most: will be able to research into the copyright law and explain how it is used in the industry by referring to detailed examples  (Grade C)
Some: will be able to discuss how  the copyright law is used within the music industry by discussing the main points and by referring to excellent examples  (Grade A)

1)     Introduction
Explain what the copyright law is and how it is used within the music industry

2)     Applying for copyright
1) Explain why you had to apply for copyright
2) Discuss in detail what you did. Identify the record label, email, phone, etc (step by step account)
3) Response- did you get a response from the record label, how many times did you contact them, are you still awaiting a response?

3)     Include a copy of the email that you sent the record company

Copyright is the legal right given to the inventor by the country that grants them exclusive rights of 

its distribution and use.  Copyright enables the inventor to profit from his intellectual effort by 

preventing other people and companies from using or selling your product/service unless prior 

consent is given. In terms of media an example of copyright would be where an artist copyrights 

their music. This is where royalties come from, for example the artist for popular Christmas song 

'Merry Xmas everybody'  would receive lots of compensation (money) from royalties as people 

need to pay to be given the right tho play their music as it is copyrighted. 

In order to use our desired song, Sub Focus- Turn back time for our music video, we had to ask for 

the copyright holders permission. We had to do this because otherwise it would be illegal to 

include the song in our music video as it would infringe the copyright law. 

In order to get the appropriate permission to use the song we first had to identify how the copyright 

holder was and after a quick search on google we found at that one of the record labels that he 

belonged to 'Ram Records' would be the right company to contact. We then went to their website 

where we where able to contact them through their 'contact us' link. The message we sent was as 
follows.  


Dear copyright holder,

We are a group of A Level student’s from West Hatch High School, writing to request your 

permission for the song Turn Back time by Sub Focus. With your permission, we would create a 

music video for this song, which would part of our coursework.

The song would only be used in an educational context, viewed only by our media class and OCR 

examination’s officer. It will not be released to a large audience. The audience and your company 

would of course, be recognised throughout and a copyright notice may be added to our projects if 

you wish. In this case, you may send us this information.
